SUMMARY:TRED Conference- How Public is Public Education?
DESCRIPTION:How Public is Public Education?\n3rd Annual TRED Conference
\nNovember 14 and 15\, 2014
\nUMass Dartmouth\nHosted by the Doctoral Students of the Department of Educational Leadership \nThe Transformative Researchers and Educators for Democracy (TRED) will be holding its third Annual Conference\, How Public is Public Education\, November 14 and 15\, 2014\, at the University of Massachusetts Dartmouth.

The theme of the 2014 conference\, How Public is Public Education?\, reflects the critical elements within and beyond the field of education that need to be discussed\, heard\, and analyzed as we search for solutions. Professors\, students\, educational leaders\, and the public are all welcome to submit proposals and to attend the conference. \nDownload the Call for Proposals \nFounded in 2011\, UMass Dartmouth’s Department of Educational Leadership and Policy Studies has grown to four cohorts of future transformative leaders. Ph.D. and Ed.D. candidates in the program have sought to provide a public space for educational researchers and practitioners to engage in critical and transformative dialogues. Through forums\, presentation sessions\, panel discussions\, and informal gatherings\, TRED continues its ambition to place the discussion of educational leadership and policy within the dynamics of ideological production that reflect existing power imbalances that perpetuate inequalities within society. \n  \nFor more information contact: \n

Elaine Andrade\n
508.910.9039
\neandrade [at] umassd [dot] edu

SUMMARY:Rally against Student Loan Debt Crisis
DESCRIPTION:Thank Sen. Elizabeth Warren for her efforts to cut student loan interest rates bysigning PHENOM’s thank you card. \nAlmost a million Massachusetts residents owe more than $24\,000\,000\,000 (that’s billion!) in student debt\, much of it at high interest rates. Private banks and the federal government have been making a ton of money on these loans\, while the future prospects of both individual borrowers and the state’s economy are undermined. \nPHENOM\, together with other groups\, is determined to do something about this crisis this year! \nWe’re kicking off the school year with a rally outside Senator Elizabeth Warren’s office to highlight the problem and thank her for her efforts. She has introduced a bill that would allow a huge number of student loan borrowers to refinance their loans – both government and private – at a lower interest rate. Under the Bank on Students Emergency Loan Refinancing Act\, 581\,000 Massachusetts borrowers would benefit\, saving over a billion dollars in the first year alone. \nFigure out how much you would save on your loan if this bill passes.  Then \nJoin us as we \n\nUnveil new research on the causes and consequences of student debt in Massachusetts\, and creatively bring media attention to the crisis\nShow support for Sen. Warren’s legislation and thank her for her efforts\nEngage downtown Boston in a discussion of student debt\n\nBring your friends and join PHENOM\, Jobs with Justice\, Campaign for a Debt-Free Future\, Generation Progress\, Higher Ed Not Debt and others: \nFriday\, September 5 \n12 Noon to 1 PM \n15 Sudbury Street\, Boston \nIf you can’t come – or even if you can – please participate by signing PHENOM’s thank you card.
