Annual Meeting June 6, 2009

Help shape the future of Massachusetts Public Higher Education at the PHENOM Annual Meeting June 6th in Springfield, MA.  Join the Public Higher Education Network of Massachusetts for an afternoon of lobbying, planning the future of PHENOM, and celebrating a successful year of organizing!

Agenda

2:00 Lobby Delegates at the State Democratic Party Convention, Mass Mutual Center - see directions below

We will be leafleting and talking to delegates about the importance of public higher education for our state's recovery from the recession.

3:00 Annual Meeting, Springfield Technical Community College, Building 2, 7th floor - see directions below.

  • Evaluate our organizing in 2008-09: What did PHENOM do well and what could we have done better?  We will consider our political positions, our mobilizations, our impact, our alliances, our presence on campuses, in the media, in the legislature, in the community, etc.
  • Planning for the future: What should PHENOM do next year -- which issues to prioritize, where to focus our organizing, how to better mobilize people, what alliances to build.
  • Structure: How can we maximize participation, democracy, ownership, and activism?  How often should we have what kinds of meetings?  How do we ensure accountability of elected leadership?  Any proposed bylaw changes will be sent out at least 10 days before the Annual Meeting.
  • Nominations and Elections for PHENOM leadership: The Executive Committee consists of 8 people, including 3-5 students and 3-5 faculty/staff (see Article IV of the bylaws for exact details).  Please nominate specific people by emailing This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it .  [Please make sure they want to serve before nominating them!]
  • Budget: How should our priorities be reflected in our budget?  What are the most important things PHENOM should spend money on, what sort of staff support is most useful, and how can PHENOM do better raising substantial funds?  This year's detailed financial information and a proposed budget for next year will be posted no later than June 1st.

6:30 Dinner, Music, Party       Dinner will be provided at no cost - please This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it with any special dietary needs or restrictions.

Preliminary Discussions

In preparation for the meeting, we invite you to participate in a conversation about the future of PHENOM on our discussion board.  This is a place to begin discussions about the agenda topics that we will continue at the meeting.  Please share your opinions here as it will help shape the direction of the meeting.  If you will not be able to attend the meeting, the discussion board is an excellent place to share your input and become part of conversations for the future.  Share your ideas today: Discuss PHENOM Past, Present and Future.

PHENOM has been busy this year.  As a preface to discussion, visit our history page for a list of accomplishments for the 2008-2009 year.
